ABOUT THE BOAT CLUB
Background
When the Oldman Dam was under construction in the early 90s, the Alberta government designated sites around the reservoir for recreation site development. Initially, the government was unable to generate interest in developing facilities on the current boat club site. Subsequently, a group of keen campers and boaters negotiated details of a lease and in 1993, a 21-year lease was issued to the five-member Canadian Wilderness Recreation (CWR) Boat Club Society. The initial lease was for 21 years and was set to expire in 2014. In 2014, the executive signed a new lease with an expiry on March 31, 2024. A detailed article on the history of the CWR Boat Club is available here. |
How it works
The CWR Boat Club property is owned by the Government of Alberta and designated as a Provincial Recreation Area. The CWR Boat Club Society leases the land from the Alberta Government. The five-member executive manages the finances and operations of the boat club. Individual lots are subleased from the society. The sub-leases are traded on the open market. Regulations and lease documents can be seen here. Two full-time staff (April 1 to October 15) assist with grounds upkeep, general maintenance, shower house and toilet maintenance and irrigation. Below is a 4-minute aerial video of the boat club taken in September, 2015.
